What is the best film to have won the Oscar for Best Picture?

Answer by Robert Frost:

"Best" is obviously subjective, but I'm happy to share my opinion.  Here is my rating of all the Best Picture winners.

The 9 highest rated films from that graph are:

  • Schindler's List
  • Casablanca
  • The Apartment
  • Amadeus
  • The Silence of the Lambs
  • Unforgiven
  • Forrest Gump
  • The Hurt Locker
  • The King's Speech

All of those films get the same 9/10 rating, except for Schindler's List, that goes just a little bit extra to receive a 10.

From the stunning importance of the story to the malevolent evil of the Nazis so embodied by Ralph Fiennes.

To the heartbreaking emotion of Oskar Schindler as portrayed by Liam Neeson.

To the haunting images such as the lone girl in red.

Schindler's List documents a horrific part of our history but also shows the possible nobility of the human spirit.  It is both historical document and gripping drama.  If we could only show an alien species one film to show we understand our humanity, Schindler's List would be a worthy choice.
